About Replacing a Car Registration in New York

You must replace a lost car registration in New York if your original credential goes missing or you believe that another individual has stolen the item from your vehicle. If your registration card or sticker sustains significant damage, you must also order a replacement.

Replacing a lost vehicle registration in NY is simple, as the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) allows you to submit your request online, in person or by mail. To submit an online request, however, you must meet certain requirements.

If you cannot apply for a duplicate registration credential online, you must submit your request in person or by mail. Learn more about the registration replacement requirements and the steps you must take to submit your request in the sections below.

Replacing a Lost Registration in New York

To replace car registration credentials, you can submit a request in one of three ways: online, in person or by mail.

Online requests are typically the quickest and most convenient, but you may choose to apply in person or by mail if you prefer.

If your vehicle was built prior to model year 1973, however, you cannot replace your registration credentials online. Additionally, you cannot apply online if your vehicle’s registration credentials are expired or suspended, or if your registration materials were stolen or vandalized.

Note: If you lose or damage your registration within days or weeks leading up to its expiration date, it may be possible to complete the registration renewal process instead of obtaining the duplicate.
