About Replacing Car Registration in New Mexico
A stolen, damaged or lost car registration in New Mexico must be replaced as quickly as possible. Driving with an unreadable or lost vehicle registration can result in being ticketed for not having proper credentials in the vehicle at all times. Fortunately, the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (NM MVD) allows motorists to replace registration documents online or in person.
If your registration is about to expire, you may be able to get a renewal instead of a replacement. Download our free guide to learn how to get a duplicate registration and find out what you can do if your registration materials were stolen.
Replacing Lost Car Registration in New Mexico Online
Many drivers wonder, “Can you print your car registration online in New Mexico?” While you cannot directly print a copy of registration from the website, you can use MyMVD to request and receive a replacement registration. Your new registration materials will be mailed to you within a few days of completing your online transaction.
To replace a lost registration online, you must meet New Mexico’s auto insurance requirements. Bernalillo county residents must also have an up-to-date emissions inspection on file with the MVD. To use the MyMVD website, you must have a valid credit card for payment, a current email address and one of the following:
- Full vehicle identification number (VIN)
- MVD registration renewal postcard control number
- Last six characters of VIN plus license plate number
Getting a New Mexico Duplicate Registration in Person
Auto registration replacement in New Mexico is also available in person. Visit your local MVD office and bring your damaged DMV copy of registration, if you have it. You will also need the following:
- Vehicle identification number (VIN)
- License plate number
- Proof of identity
- Proof of auto insurance
Auto registration replacement fees can be paid with cash, check or credit card. If you are nearing the end of your current registration period, you may decide not to get a replacement car registration and complete your car registration renewal instead.
What should I do if my copy of registration was stolen?
If you need a duplicate car registration in NM after your original documents or tags were stolen, you may wish to file a police report with your local law enforcement agency. While OK law does not require a police report, having one on file can protect you if someone commits a crime while using your license plate or registration card.
