Replacing a Lost Registration in Massachusetts

To replace car registration documents after they become damaged or lost, you may place an order online, in person or by phone. If you wish to replace a license plate decal, however, you must visit an RMV Service Center to submit your request in person.

As long as you can provide pieces of information about yourself and your vehicle, you may purchase a replacement certificate online. However, you must be able to provide your Massachusetts driver’s license number and vehicle registration number. If you cannot provide this information, you must submit your request in person or by phone.

In Person

To get a copy of registration credentials in person rather than online, you must visit an RMV Service Center. Members of the American Automobile Association (AAA) may also submit a request at an AAA location. Be sure to contact the office before heading in, as accepted payment methods vary throughout the state.

By Phone

To request an MA auto registration replacement by phone, you must be able to provide your driver’s license or identification card number, as well as your vehicle’s registration number. If you can provide this information, you may call the RMV’s Contact Center to submit your request.

Can I get a duplicate car registration in Massachusetts if I lease my vehicle?

To get a DMV copy of registration credentials for a vehicle that you are leasing, you must visit a local RMV Service Center to submit your request in person. If you purchase your replacement car registration online or by phone, the RMV will send your duplicate certificate directly to the leasing dealer.

Replacing Lost Massachusetts Car Registration Plates
