About Replacing Car Registration in Louisiana

To replace a damaged or lost car registration in Louisiana, you may submit your request online, in person or by mail, depending on your personal preference. If you choose to submit your request in person, you must visit a local Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) during regular business hours.

When replacing damaged or lost vehicle registration documents, you typically need to pay a small fee to cover the cost of purchasing a duplicate OMV credential. In most cases, you must pay a fee whenever you wish to purchase a replacement OMV credential, no matter what happened to the original document. However, you may obtain a replacement car registration at no extra charge if you apply for a car registration renewal and do not receive your new license plates and/or validation stickers in the mail.

Getting a Duplicate Registration in Louisiana

You can usually replace car registration credentials online, in person or by mail. If you fail to receive your registration decals or license plates in the mail after renewing, however, you must visit an OMV office to obtain a free replacement within 60 days of placing your order.

During your office visit, you must present a copy of your current registration certificate, proof of automobile insurance and a photo ID. To learn more about obtaining a copy of registration credentials online, in person or by mail, review the following sections.

Replacing Online

You may be wondering, “Can you print your car registration online in LA?” To replace a lost registration credential online, you just need to provide your registered vehicle’s license plate number, expiration date and model year. You must also be able to pay the applicable fee with a credit card.

After submitting your request, you can print a temporary registration receipt to use until your permanent credential arrives in the mail.

Before obtaining a duplicate car registration credential online, it is important to verify that your address is current with the Louisiana OMV. After placing your order, the OMV will send the replacement credential to the address on file with the department.

In Person

If you prefer to obtain your auto registration replacement in person, you must visit your local OMV office. During your visit, present your Louisiana driver’s license, proof of automobile insurance and payment for the applicable fee. Additionally, you will need to provide your registered vehicle’s identification number (VIN), make and model.

By Mail

To apply for a DMV copy of registration credentials by mail, you must forward a written request, proof of automobile insurance and payment for the applicable fee to your local OMV office. When submitting your request by mail, you may pay by check, money order, cashier’s check or electronic funds transfer.
