About Replacing a Car Registration in Maryland

You must replace a damaged or lost car registration in Maryland whenever your original document sustains damages or is no longer in your possession. If you do not purchase replacement credentials, you could receive a traffic citation if a police officer pulls you over.

Typically, you can replace a defective or lost vehicle registration card in person, online or by mail. You can use all three of these application methods to replace car registration license plates and validation decals as well. To learn more about each of these application methods, review the information below.

Can you print your car registration online in Maryland?

Online applications are the quickest and most convenient when replacing a registration. However, you must be able to provide several important pieces of information.

The first step in ordering a duplicate registration in MD is accessing the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) website.

You must have your vehicle information on hand, including the title number and current vehicle tag number of your registered automobile.

Keep in mind that there is also an application fee that you must pay with a checking account or another form of credit.

After submitting your online request for replacement car registration documents, the MVA will mail your replacement credential(s) to the address on file. As such, you must first change your address with the department if your current address is not on file with the MVA

Other Methods for Replacing a Damaged or Lost Registration in Maryland

If you cannot purchase an MD copy of your registration credentials online or you prefer to submit your application using another method, complete the following steps:

  1. Fill out an application.
  2. Obtain any required documents.
  3. Sign the application.
  4. Gather payment for the required fee
  5. Submit your application materials by mailing your paperwork to the MVA’s Registration Renewal Section in Glen Burnie or by visiting any local full-service MVA branch.

When completing your auto registration replacement application, remember to provide a reason for your request. Depending on the specific situation, you may need to purchase a replacement credential if your original document was lost, stolen or damaged to the extent that it is no longer legible.

When purchasing a DMV copy of registration plates, you must also present proof of your identity if you choose to submit your application in person at a local MVA office.
