How to Renew Car Registration in Vermont
You must apply for car registration renewal in Vermont every one or two years before your vehicle’s license plates expire. In most cases, you can renew your registration credentials in person, online, by mail or by phone. However, you must meet certain eligibility requirements to renew your registration online or by phone.
As a reminder to apply for tag renewal in a timely manner, the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) typically sends you a renewal notice that includes specific instructions for renewing your license plates. If you do not receive this renewal notice, however, you must complete the renewal process in person or by mail.

Renewing Online
If you are eligible to renew registration online in Vermont, visit the state’s DMV Express portal to provide your driver’s license ID or registration number. If you provide your driver’s license ID number, you may choose to simultaneously renew the registration credentials of multiple vehicles.
After completing the transaction, retain the receipt as your temporary registration credential. Your new registration documents will arrive in the mail within four to six weeks.
By Phone
If you prefer to perform your car reg check and renewal by phone, contact the Vermont DMV’s Registration Division to provide your state-issued driver’s license number and payment information.
By Mail
If you are not eligible to renew and check vehicle registration status online or you prefer to complete the process by mail, forward your renewal notice and payment for the required fee to the DMV office in Williston. If you did not receive a renewal notice, however, you must submit a completed registration application in lieu of the reminder card.
In Person
If you prefer to perform your car registration check and renewal in person, visit your local DMV office to submit payment for the required fee and a completed renewal notice or registration application. In some cases, you may apply for DMV car registration renewal at a participating office of your local Town Clerk.
