How to Renew Car Registration in Oklahoma

The Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) offers three Oklahoma car registration renewal options. Most drivers can get an OK tag renewal online, in person or by mail. The Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) sends renewal notices by mail or email several weeks before your registration expires. Although having your renewal notice in hand can be helpful, you can renew your tag on time without this document.

Failing to obtain an Oklahoma DMV registration renewal on time can result in late fees or other penalties. In fact, even if you do not receive a renewal notice, you are still responsible for renewing on time. Renewing Oklahoma Car Registration Online

The OTC provides a convenient way to renew registration online through its Oklahoma Convenient Auto Renewal System (OK CARS) website. However, only certain types of vehicles are eligible for online license plate renewal in OK, including most standard noncommercial vehicles, motorhomes and motorcycles.

To renew registration online in OK, you must provide the following information:

  • Last four characters of the vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • License plate number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Proof of current auto liability insurance

You can pay for your online tag renewal with an electronic funds transfer from your checking account or a major credit/debit card. Accepted cards include Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Discover.

Oklahoma Car Registration Renewal in Person or By Mail

Getting a DMV car registration renewal in person or by mail are the other options if you cannot or do not want to process your renewal online. If you prefer to renew in person, simply go to your local OTC tag office and bring the information listed below. Note that the same information is required for mailed tag renewal applications. You will need your:

  • Your registration renewal notice, if you have it.
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN), title number or license plate number.
  • Proof of adequate auto liability insurance.
  • Fee payment.

In-person payment options may vary by tag agency, so call ahead. If you decide to mail your DMV registration renewal, enclose a check made payable to the Oklahoma Tax Commission and write your driver’s license number on the memo line. Use the mailing address printed on your renewal notice.

How can I check car registration status?

A car registration check can help you find out what happened to registration materials that fail to arrive on time. You can check vehicle registration status online on the OK CARS website. If you would rather speak to an OTC agent, call in a car reg check to your local OTC tag office.
