How to Renew Your Car Registration in North Dakota

You need to apply for a North Dakota car registration renewal every year in order to be able to drive your car in the state. DMV registration renewal is available through the North Dakota Department of Transportation (ND DOT). The department allows you to renew your registration online, in person, by kiosk or by mail.

If you own more than one vehicle, ND DOT offers flexible tag renewal dates to help spread vehicle registration costs throughout the year. You should receive a registration reminder notice by mail or email several weeks before your registration expires. However, you will still be responsible for renewing your registration even if you do not receive this notice. Learn more about North Dakota vehicle registration renewal below.

Renewing Registration Online in North Dakota

You can renew your registration online in North Dakota by visiting the ND DOT motor vehicle registration renewal website. You should be prepared with the following:

  • Invoice number from your renewal notice
  • License plate number
  • North Dakota title information, if requested

You may need information depending on your situation.

Once the system retrieves your license plate renewal information, simply follow the prompts, pay your fees and print your receipt. You should carry this receipt in your vehicle until your new documents arrive by mail, usually within five to 10 days.

Getting a North Dakota Car Registration Renewal in Person or by Kiosk

If you cannot get a DMV car registration renewal online or you prefer to renew in person, you may visit your nearest ND DOT office. You can also visit one of the many self-service DOT kiosk locations across the state. Kiosks will dispense car registration renewal cards and license plate tabs on the spot.

You will need your driver’s license or ID card in addition to the renewal notice and a form of payment for both types of in-person transactions. Note that ND car registration renewal fees are based on the year your vehicle was first registered in ND, as well as on its weight and class. Accepted forms of payment may vary by location.

Getting ND Tag Renewal by Mail

A DOT registration renewal by mail may be a more convenient option, provided that you submit your application a few weeks prior to the registration expiration date. Your registration renewal notice will include instructions for submitting your renewal by mail.

Checking Vehicle Registration Status Online

If your DOT registration renewal documents, stickers and tags do not arrive on time, you may want to perform a car registration check to get an update on their status. A car reg check will let you know if your items have been mailed, and if not, why. You may also call the DOT or check vehicle registration status online through the ND DOT online services portal.
