How to Renew Car Registration in Massachusetts
Applying for a car registration renewal in Massachusetts is a mandatory process that you must complete every one to two years, depending on your vehicle’s registration type. If you do not renew before your vehicle’s credentials expire, you cannot legally operate the automobile on public roads. Driving without a valid license plate or registration will likely result in a traffic ticket if you are stopped by a law enforcement agent.
As a reminder to apply for your registration tag renewal before your registration credentials expire, the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) usually mails you an application with a list of requirements that you must meet prior to applying.
Depending on the situation, you may need to bring your renewal application to an insurance agent to obtain an updated stamp as proof of your active insurance policy. To apply for DMV registration renewal in MA, you may choose between several renewal methods including online, in person, by mail or by telephone.
Applying for License Plate Renewal in Massachusetts
You can typically renew registration online, in person, by mail or by telephone, depending on the application method you prefer. If you receive a renewal application from the RMV, this form will also provide you with specific instructions for renewing your registration documents. If you do not receive a renewal application from the RMV, however, you may download a copy from the registry’s website.

If you wish to renew your registration online before your license plates expire, you must be able to provide your driver’s license number, email address and the last four digits of your Social Security number (SSN). You must also be able to pay the registration fee with an accepted form of credit.
If you prefer to apply for RMV registration renewal in person, you must bring your completed application and payment for the applicable fee to a local RMV service center or participating American Automobile Association (AAA) branch. However, you may only visit a participating AAA branch if you are an active member.
When applying for a MA DMV car registration renewal by mail, you must send your completed application and a check or money order to the RMV’s mail-in department in Boston. If your registration credentials are due to expire within the next few days, however, it may be best to use a quicker application method, as mail-in requests take longer to process.
To apply for MA vehicle registration renewal by telephone, you must be able to provide your name, address and license plate number. Additionally, you must be able to provide a credit or debit card number as payment for the annual registration fee.
