How to Renew Car Registration in Kentucky
You must apply for a Kentucky car registration renewal each year before your vehicle’s existing license plates expire. As a reminder to apply for DMV registration renewal in a timely manner, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will send you a notice in the mail. If you do not receive this notice, however, you will still be responsible for renewing your registration credentials before they expire.
To apply for a tag renewal in KY, you may submit your request in person at a local County Clerk’s office or online. If you are leasing your registered vehicle, do not have an active automobile insurance policy on file with the KYTC or you need to pay property taxes, you must renew your registration in person.

How to Check Vehicle Registration Status Online in Kentucky
Before renewing your credentials, you may perform a car reg check with your state DMV to determine whether you are eligible to renew online. To do so, you must be able to provide your vehicle’s license plate and title number. Refer to your current registration certificate or annual renewal notice to locate this information.
How to Apply for Kentucky License Plate Renewal
After performing your car registration check in KY, you must decide whether you wish to renew online or in person. If your registration credentials are not current or you need to settle any outstanding property taxes, you must renew your license plates in person.
Additionally, you cannot renew your registration credentials online if you have purchased a new automobile insurance policy within the previous 45 days. Learn more about each of these application methods below.
How to Renew Online
To renew registration online in KY, you must be able to provide your vehicle’s license plate number, title number and a credit card number as payment for the required fee. After completing the transaction, you must allow up to seven business days for the KYTC to process your online request.
If you cannot provide this information or your license plates are due to expire within the next few days, visit your local County Clerk’s office to complete the renewal process in person.
In Person
To apply for KY DMV car registration renewal in person, visit your local County Clerk’s office to submit your photo ID, current registration certificate, proof of automobile insurance and payment for the required fee.
