How to Renew Car Registration in Oregon

Applying for a car registration renewal in Oregon is a process you must complete before your vehicle’s license plates expire. While there are no registration tag renewal late fees for failing to renew on time, you may receive a traffic ticket if a police officer pulls you over.

To help you renew your registration plates before they expire, the Oregon Division of Driver and Motor Vehicle Services (DMV) provides you with the option to submit your application in person, online or by mail.

Oregon DMV Registration Renewal Notices

The DMV will send you an OR license plate renewal notice several weeks before your vehicle’s registration credentials are scheduled to expire.

This notice provides you with specific instructions on how to renew your license plates on time, as well as how much you will have to pay in fees.

Moreover, you need your OR DMV car registration renewal notice in order to renew your credentials online or in person at a Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) inspection station.

If you lose this notice or do not receive it, you must contact the DMV to request a replacement before attempting to renew your credentials online or at a local DEQ facility.

Note: If you recently lost or damaged your current registration and it is close to expiring, you can complete the registration renewal process instead of ordering a duplicate that will only be valid for a short time.

Applying for Vehicle Registration Renewal in Oregon

You can renew your registration online, in person or by mail if you own and operate a vehicle in Oregon.

However, your vehicle must first pass a car reg check and emissions inspection if you live in a Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Vehicle Inspection Program area. Once your vehicle passes the emissions test, you can start the registration renewal process.

If you can present your renewal notice from the current year, you may be able to renew at the DEQ facility. Otherwise, you must renew your registration credentials in person or by mail.

Renewing Online

You may check vehicle registration status online and renew your license plates if you have access to your renewal notice. When renewing your DMV credentials online, you must be able to provide your automobile insurance information and credit card payment details.

In Person

When renewing your credentials in person, you must visit your local DMV office to submit your renewal notice or completed application. You must also pay the required registration fee during your office visit.

By Mail

You always have the option to complete your OR car registration renewal by mail. This entails submitting your reminder notice or application to the DMV’s office in Salem. You must also provide payment for the required fee in the form of a check or money order made payable to the division.
