How to Renew Car Registration in New Mexico
The Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) offers three New Mexico car registration renewal options: online, in person and by mail. A registration renewal is required every one to two years. The NM MVD will mail a renewal notice several weeks before your registration expires, but you can renew on time without having the notice in hand. In fact, even if you do not receive the notice, you are still responsible for renewing your registration.

Renewing Registration Online in New Mexico
Most motorists find it easier to renew registration online via the MyMVD website. You can choose from express license plate renewal or traditional registration renewal. The express option is streamlined for basic renewal transactions, while the traditional renewal tab allows more complicated registration tasks.
To renew registration online in NM, you must meet the state’s auto insurance requirements. If you live in Bernalillo County, you must also have an up-to-date emissions inspection. You will need to provide a valid email address and one of the following:
- Full vehicle identification number (VIN)
- MVD registration renewal postcard control number
- Last six characters of VIN plus license plate number
You will need a valid Mastercard, Visa, American Express or Discover credit card to pay your MVD registration renewal fees. Your total amount due will be reduced by up to 5 percent for using the online renewal method.
Getting New Mexico Car Registration Renewal in Person
Getting a DMV car registration renewal in person is another popular option in New Mexico. Locate your nearest MVD field office and make an appointment if needed. Take your registration renewal reminder and cash or a personal check for fee payment. Decide ahead of time if you want to apply for a one-year or two-year renewal.
Submitting a NM DMV Registration Renewal by Mail
A by-mail NM tag renewal takes longer to process but can be convenient if you have the time. Simply mail the car registration renewal form and a check to cover one- or two-year renewal fees. Use the mailing address printed on your renewal notice.
How can I check car registration status?
Perform a car registration check if you do not receive your new registration materials in a timely manner. You can check vehicle registration status online by visiting MyMVD. You can also request a car reg check by calling any MVD field office during normal business hours.
