How to Renew Car Registration in Kentucky
You must apply for a Kentucky car registration renewal each year before your vehicle’s existing license plates expire. As a reminder to apply for DMV registration renewal in a timely manner, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will send you a notice in the mail. If you do not receive this notice, however, you will still be responsible for renewing your registration credentials before they expire.

If you are leasing your registered vehicle, do not have an active automobile insurance policy on file with the KYTC or you need to pay property taxes, you must renew your registration in person.
