How to Renew Car Registration in Kentucky

You must apply for a Kentucky car registration renewal each year before your vehicle’s existing credentials expire. As a reminder to apply for DMV registration renewal before the expiration date, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) typically sends a notice in the mail. If you do not receive this notice, however, you will still be responsible for renewing your registration credentials before they expire.

To apply for a tag renewal in KY, you may submit your request in person at a local County Clerk’s office or online. You must renew your registration in person if you are leasing your registered vehicle, do not have an active automobile insurance policy on file with the KYTC or you need to pay property taxes.

Checking Vehicle Registration Status Online in Kentucky

Before renewing your credentials, you may perform a car reg check with your state agency to determine whether you are eligible to renew online. To do so, you must be able to provide your vehicle’s license plate and title number. Refer to your current registration certificate or annual renewal notice to locate this information.

Applying for Kentucky License Plate Renewal

After performing your car registration check in KY, you must decide whether you wish to renew online or in person. If your registration credentials are not current or you need to settle any outstanding property taxes, you must renew your license plates in person.

Additionally, you cannot renew your registration credentials online if you have purchased a new automobile insurance policy within the previous 45 days. Learn more about each of these application methods below.

Renewing Online

To renew registration online in KY, you must be able to provide your vehicle’s license plate number, title number and a credit card number as payment for the required fee. After completing the transaction, you must allow up to seven business days for the KYTC to process your online request.

If you cannot provide this information or your license plates are due to expire within the next few days, visit your local County Clerk’s office to complete the renewal process in person.

In Person

To apply for KY DMV car registration renewal in person, visit your local County Clerk’s office to submit your photo ID, current registration certificate, proof of automobile insurance and payment for the required fee.
