About Changing Your Name on Your Oklahoma Registration
A name change on car registration in Oklahoma is necessary within 10 days of officially changing your legal name. Whether you took on a new name after a marriage, divorce or another significant life event, you must change car registration information to reflect your new name. The Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) is the agency that handles motor vehicle registration and titles.
To change your name on car registration materials, you must visit an OTC tag office in person. However, you are required to register your name change with the Social Security Administration (SSA) first. The OTC will use your Social Security record to verify your name. When is an Oklahoma DMV name change required?
There are many reasons a DMV name change may be necessary. In addition to marriage or divorce, drivers may decide to legally take on a stage name. Some drivers change their name for religious reasons or personal preference. Writers may decide to make a pen name permanent.
Changing your name on car registration materials also happens after teenagers or young adults are adopted, or when a driver transitions gender. Other DMV name change requests are the result of a driver noticing a misspelling or other mistake on current registration documents.
For the sake of clarity, it is best if your Social Security card, Oklahoma driver’s license and registration documents are all assigned to the same legal name.
