About Changing Your Name on Your Mississippi Registration
You must change your name on car registration in Mississippi whenever you alter your legal name due to marriage, divorce, adoption or any other reason. When you change car registration information through the Department of Revenue (DOR), you will automatically update the name on your vehicle’s certificate of title as well.
Before updating the name on your registration and titling credentials, you must change your name through the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Mississippi Department of Safety (MDPS). Until you notify the SSA of your new name and obtain an updated Social Security card, you cannot update the information on your driver and vehicle registration records.

Before performing a DMV name change in MS, you must apply for a replacement Social Security card that displays your new legal name. To do so, submit an application for a new Social Security card to your local Social Security office. With your request, be sure to include certified proof of your new legal name, identity and U.S. citizenship status (more information here).
