About Replacing a Car Registration in Maine
You must replace a lost car registration in Maine as soon as your original registration is no longer in your possession. If you fail to replace a lost vehicle registration certificate, you may receive a traffic ticket if a police officer pulls you over.
In addition to a lost registration, another reason to purchase a duplicate credential is if your registration becomes damaged to the point where it is no longer legible.
Note: If you lose or damage your registration close to its expiration date, you may be able to complete the registration renewal process instead of ordering a duplicate.
In most cases, you can submit your request in person or online through the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). If you wish to purchase replacement license plates and/or validation stickers, however, you must submit your request in person or by mail.

Getting a Duplicate Registration in Maine
To replace car registration documents, you must submit your request in person or online.
In Person
To purchase a ME copy of registration credentials in person, you must visit your local BMV branch. Once there, you will need to provide some personal and vehicle information, such as:
- Your vehicle’s license plate number.
- Your date of birth.
- Your full name.
Depending on the town in which you live, you may be able to submit your request at a local municipal office rather than a BMV branch.
Online
“Can you print your car registration online in ME?” is a common question many drivers have.
Typically, you can submit your auto registration replacement request online if the following statements are true:
- You can provide your name, birth date and your vehicle’s license plate number.
- You have access to a working printer.
- Your vehicle registration credentials are not due to expire within the next seven days.

Depending on your preferred method, you may submit your application in one of two ways:
- In person at your local municipal office or BMV
