About Changing Your Name on Your Georgia Registration
Before you can change name on car registration in Georgia, you must notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) of your new name and update your state-issued driver’s license with the Department of Driver Services (DDS).
After updating your Social Security card and Georgia driver’s license or identification card, you must visit the tag office in your county to change the name on your registration and titling credentials.
When you change car registration information in Georgia, you must update the name on your vehicle’s certificate of title at the same time. After changing your name and updating your vehicle records, you may choose to order a replacement car registration that displays this new information.

Before performing a name change on car registration credentials after you legally change your name, you must update the information on your Social Security card and state driver’s license or identification card. To change the name on your Social Security card, you must complete an application at the SSA and submit it along with proof of your identity and change of name.

The next step to processing a DMV name change is to update the information on your Georgia driver’s license or ID card. To make this change, you must visit a DDS Customer Service Center within 60 days of legally changing your name. You cannot update your vehicle registration and titling records until you correct the information on your driver’s license.
When changing the name on your Georgia driver’s license or ID card, you must be able to provide the service agent with certified proof of the name change, such as a marriage certificate.
After doing so, you may change name on car registration credentials by visiting your county tag office or submitting your request by mail.
Changing the Name on Your Georgia Car Registration Credentials
When changing your name on your car registration, you must also update the information on your vehicle’s certificate of title. To complete these steps, you must visit a tag office in your county or submit your application materials by mail.
When submitting your request, be sure to include certified proof of your name change, proof of your identity and the vehicle’s current certificate of title.
If you choose to apply for your car registration name change by mail rather than in person, you must also submit a completed Motor Vehicle Title Application. When completing this application, you must provide information about your registered motor vehicle, including its identification number (VIN), title number, odometer reading and year.
When completing your Motor Vehicle Title Application after your legal name changes, you must also provide personal information about the automobile’s registered owners.
To change the name on your vehicle registration records, for instance, you must provide the full legal names, birth dates and driver’s license numbers of each registered automobile owner.
