About Changing the Name on Your Connecticut Car Registration
You must remember to change name on car registration in Connecticut whenever your legal name changes and no longer matches the information on your original vehicle records. Before changing name on car registration credentials, however, you need to notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) and obtain a new Social Security card.
In most cases, you can change your name with the SSA by visiting a local Social Security office or by mailing your application.
After changing your name with the SSA, you must update the information on your Connecticut driver’s license or identification card. Once you change the name on your driver’s license or ID card, you must visit a local office of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to change the name on your auto registration records.

To apply for a CT DMV name change after you update the information on your Social Security card and state-issued driver’s license or ID card, you must visit a local office of the Department of Motor Vehicles to submit your request in person.
You cannot change the name on your driver or vehicle registration credentials without visiting a local DMV office.
During your office visit, you must present certified proof of your new name, a completed application and your vehicle’s current registration document.
Depending on the situation, proof of your name change may include:

If you need to change name on car registration credentials but cannot present your vehicle’s original registration document during your office visit, you must also order a replacement vehicle registration at that time.
