About Changing Your Address on Your Washington Registration
You must file a Washington DMV change of address with the Department of Licensing (DOL) whenever you move to a new home within the state or change your mailing address. The steps to change car registration address info are shorter than those for updating your name on your registration. In fact, you may even be able to change your car registration address online.
The DOL’s DMV change of address form only requires minimal information that you can find on your vehicle or your current registration paperwork. Review the following sections to learn the most effective way to change your address on your registration and what steps you must take to complete the process.
When is a Washington DMV change of address necessary?
An address change on car registration documents is necessary whenever you relocate to a new residence within the state of Washington. However, if you have not moved but want to have your DOL renewal notices sent to another address, you will also need to notify the department of your new preferred mailing address.
If it is almost time for your car registration renewal, you must submit your DOL change of address update before renewing your registration. Because your new registration materials can only be mailed to the address on file, you risk having your new tabs sent to the wrong address if you wait too long to update.
How can I change my car registration address in Washington?
If you are wondering, “How can I change my car registration address in Washington?” you have two online options and two in-person options. You can file your change of address online through your License eXpress (LX) account or submit it directly through the DOL’s website. Alternatively, you can change it in person at a vehicle licensing office or a Quick Title office.
The Washington DOL will need basic information in order to process your address change, including your:
- Full name.
- Phone number.
- New residence address.
- Driver’s license number.
Note that you do not need to provide an address if you or your vehicle are exempt from motor vehicle excise taxes or fees, or if you are homeless. Business-owned vehicles must be registered under their Washington business address.

You can submit a change of address online through the DOL portal or by logging on to your LX account. Your LX account should already include all vehicle information, but the DOL portal will ask for your license plate number and the last four digits of your VIN. Follow the prompts to change car registration address information.
Any Washington DOL office can accept address change on registration applications. You may also visit your county’s Quick Title office if that is more convenient. Consult the DOL to find your nearest locations, check business hours and make an appointment, if necessary.
Other DMV Change of Address Tasks
After submitting your DOL change of address on registration documents, you will not automatically receive a new title or registration. However, you can obtain a new copy of these documents for a fee.
Note that submitting one change of address online or in person does not update all other registrations or even your Washington driver’s license. You must submit a separate DOL change of address request for each vehicle or vessel and update the driver’s license division separately.
