About Changing Your Address on Your Virginia Registration

Performing a Virginia DMV change address is an important process that you must complete whenever you relocate to a new part of the state. If you do not change car registration address information, you may fail to receive your yearly registration renewal notices from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

When do I need to change my car registration address in Virginia?

You must perform an address change on registration and driver’s license credentials within 30 days of relocating from one part of the state to another. After notifying the Virginia DMV of your new address, you can purchase a replacement driver’s license and registration card that displays your new information if you wish to do so. However, purchasing a replacement driver’s license or registration card following a change of address is not mandatory.

Submitting a DMV Change of Address Form in Virginia

To perform a Virginia DMV address change after you relocate from one part of the state to another, you can typically complete the process in one of five ways:

• In person
• By phone
• Through email
• By mail

Updating Online

The first step in completing a change of address online in VA is logging into your MyDMV Account by providing your date of birth and driver’s license number. If you cannot provide your driver’s license number, you must provide your Social Security Number (SSN). Once you log in, there will be instructions on how to proceed.

In Person

If you cannot perform a Virginia change of address online, you can visit a local customer service center near you to submit your request in person. By Phone

To do so, you must contact the department during operating hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Mondays through Friday, and from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturdays. By Email

To change your car registration address by email, you must use the DMV’s secure online form to submit your request electronically. With your request, you must include your full name, email address and telephone number. This is perhaps the quickest method of changing your address, but is not convenient for everyone.

By Mail

If you prefer to change your Virginia vehicle registration address by mail, you must submit a written request to the department’s mail-in service center in Richmond. With your request, you must submit a completed application that includes your DMV customer information, new address and details about each vehicle that you own.
