About Changing Your Address on Your Texas Registration
There are two ways to submit a Texas DMV change of address request if you own and operate a motor vehicle in the Lone Star State. Depending on your specific situation, you may submit your request online or by mailing an application to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV).
Typically, you must mail a DMV change of address form to the department if you want to change the address on file for the vehicle’s registered owner. The online option is only to change the mailing address where you receive your registration renewal notices from the TxDMV.
After you change car registration address information online or by mail, you must allow at least two business days before your update will take effect. To reduce the risk of missing future registration notices from the TxDMV, however, it is important to report any pertinent updates to the department as soon as you change your address.

“How can I change my car registration address in Texas?”
To perform an address change on registration documents, you can complete the process online or by mail, depending on the type of information you wish to update. Additional information about each of these application methods is available in the sections below.
Updating Online
To submit your change of address online in TX, you must complete the application process by logging into your TxDMV account.
To do so, you must provide information about your vehicle, including your license plate number and your vehicle identification number (VIN).
If you do not know this information, refer to a current automobile insurance card or your most recent registration renewal notice from the TxDMV.
By Mail
When submitting your DMV address change request by mail rather than online, you must complete a formal application before mailing it to the TxDMV’s Title and Registration Division in Austin.
You can download this form directly from the TxDMV’s website or obtain a copy from your local county tax office.
Before changing your car registration address information, you must gather several pieces of information about you (the vehicle owner) and the vehicle that you own. When completing the application, for instance, you may need to provide the following information:
- The name, current address and contact information of the vehicle’s registered owner
- Information about the registered vehicle, including its VIN and license plate number
- The address where you wish to receive future registration renewal notices from the TxDMV
