About Changing Your Address on Your South Carolina Registration

You must submit a South Carolina DMV change of address request when moving to a new residence in the state. Failure to notify the DMV of your new address may result not important mail from the department. If you fail to change your car registration address, for instance, you may not receive your yearly vehicle renewal notices from the SCDMV and other important correspondence.

Note: In addition to keeping your address updated, be sure to request a DMV name change update if your name has changed due to marriage, divorce or another reason.

To change your address with the SCDMV, you may submit your request in person, online or by mail. When you perform an address change on car registration credentials, the SCDMV will automatically update the address on your driver records as well.

To learn more about these requirements and the steps you must take to notify the SCDMV of your new address, review the information below.

When do I need to change my car registration address in South Carolina?

Performing an address change on your registration is one of the first steps you must take after you move from one part of the state to another.

The SCDMV requires you to update your driver and vehicle registration records within 10 days of changing your address. To reduce your risk of running into any issues, it is important to make this change as soon as your address changes.

Submitting an SCDMV Change of Address in South Carolina

You may submit your DMV change of address form online, by mail or in person. After submitting your request to the SCDMV, you will receive a duplicate vehicle registration that displays your new address. However, you will not receive a replacement driver’s license, ID card or learner’s permit unless you apply for and purchase a duplicate credential.

Updating Online

To submit your change of address online in SC, you must be able to provide your driver’s license number or SCDMV customer number, date of birth and your full Social Security Number (SSN). If you cannot provide this information, you must change your address by mail or in person at a local SCDMV office.

By Mail

To submit your SCDMV address change request by mail rather than online, you must complete an official Application for Name and/or Address Change. Then, you must mail the completed form to the SCDMV’s Alternative Media Division in Blythewood.

When completing the SCDMV change of address form, you will need to provide:

  • Your new address.
  • Your former address.
  • Title and registration information.

If you have also changed your name, you may use this form to update the name on your driver and vehicle registration credentials as well.

In Person

To change your car registration address in person rather than online or by mail, you must visit a local SCDMV branch. After changing your vehicle registration address information, the SCDMV will automatically update your driver records as well.

While the department does not require you to purchase a replacement driving credential that displays your new address, you may choose to upgrade your driver’s license or identification card to a REAL ID-compliant credential if you have not already done so.
