About Changing Your Address on Your North Carolina Registration

Submitting a North Carolina DMV change of address request to the Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) is one of the first steps you must take after moving within the state.

Under state law, you must change car registration address information and update your state-issued driver’s license or identification card within 60 days of moving within the state of North Carolina. If you do not notify the NCDMV of your new address, you may not receive important updates and renewal notices from the Division.

In addition to changing your address with the NCDMV, you must also order a duplicate registration card soon after your address changes. Submitting a North Carolina DMV Change of Address Form

To perform an address change on car registration credentials, you must submit a request online, in person, by mail or telephone. Typically, you can correct the information on your registration card when you update your North Carolina driver’s license or identification card, regardless of which application method you choose.

Updating Online

When you update the information on your state-issued driver’s license or identification card, such as a change in your name, you can also change the address on your vehicle’s registration card. To perform a change of address online in NC, you must be able to provide some of the following information:

• Your vehicle’s license plate number
• A valid email address
• The last five characters of your vehicle’s title number

If you do not know your vehicle’s title or license plate number, you may locate this information on your vehicle or your current registration card.

After changing your North Carolina address information, you must purchase a replacement registration card and driver’s license that displays your new address. In most cases, you can order these replacement credentials online or through the myNCDMV smartphone app for iOS and Android devices.

In Person

By Mail

“Can I change my car registration address by mail?” you may ask. Yes, it is possible. To do so, you must fill out an application and mail it to the NCDMV’s Renewal, Title & Plate Unit in Raleigh. With your application, you must also include payment for purchasing a replacement registration card.

By Phone

If you prefer to apply for a North Carolina change of address by telephone, you may submit your request by calling the Division’s Customer Contact Center. After submitting your request, you must remember to purchase a replacement registration card that displays your new address.
