About Changing Your Address on Your New York Registration

Submitting a New York DMV change of address request is an important action you must take if you own a motor vehicle and move to another residence within the state.

In New York, you must change car registration address information and update your state-issued driver’s license within 10 days of moving to a new address. Even when you update your address with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), you must also remember to notify the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Moreover, there are several different methods for updating your address with the New York DMV. In most cases, you can submit your request online, in person or by mail.

To learn more about the steps you must take to update your address with the New York DMV, review the information below.

Submitting a DMV Change of Address Form in New York

To process an address change on your car registration credentials, you must notify the New York DMV by submitting a request online, by mail or in person at a local office.

In most cases, you can submit your request online, unless you are changing the name on your registration credentials as well. If you need to change the name and address on your registration credentials, you must apply in person.

After updating the address on your registration credentials, you may choose to write your new address on the front of the vehicle’s current registration card.

However, you should not write the new address on the vehicle’s certificate of title.

Updating Online

To submit your NY change of address online on the state DMV’s website, you must login to your existing account by providing a username and password. Otherwise, you have to register for account access. After logging into your account, you must be able to provide your driver’s license number and the registered vehicle’s license plate number.

Once you submit your request for an address change on registration credentials, you can purchase a replacement registration card. However, doing so is voluntary.

By Mail

You may wonder, “How can I change my car registration address by mail?” If you prefer to submit your request by mail, you must forward a completed application to the New York DMV’s License Production Bureau in Albany.

When completing your application, you must provide the following information:

  • Your name, telephone number and date of birth
  • Your new mailing and residential address
  • Your registered vehicle’s license plate number

Note: If you change your car registration address information and wish to purchase a replacement credential that displays your new address, you must submit a check or money order to the DMV along with your application for an address change. Additionally, you must also complete “Part 2” of the address change application.

In Person

To submit your request in person, you must visit a local NY Department of Motor Vehicles office. You can update your mailing and residential address online or by mail, but you cannot change your name unless you visit a DMV office.

You must present a completed application and payment for the applicable fee if you wish to order a replacement credential at this time. However, you do not need to purchase a replacement credential after your address changes, as doing so is voluntary.
