About Changing Your Address on Car Registration in New Jersey
Submitting a New Jersey DMV change of address request is an important process that you must complete if you own a motor vehicle and move from one part of the state to another.
Under state law, you must report your change of address to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) within one week of moving into a new home. However, when you change car registration address information, it also updates your other driver records on file, such as your driver’s license.
To update the address on your vehicle registration, you must notify the department online, in person at a local MVC office or by mail. To learn more about submitting a DMV change of address form to the New Jersey MVC and to discover the steps you must take to change the address on your vehicle registration documents, review the information below.
How can I change my car registration address in New Jersey?
To apply for an address change on car registration and driver’s license credentials, you can typically submit your request in one of three ways:
- Online
- In person
- By mail
The New Jersey MVC encourages you to submit your request online, as this is the easiest and most convenient method. However, you are free to choose whichever method best suits you. If you wish to purchase a replacement registration card and/or driver’s license that displays your new address, you may wish to submit your request in person at a local MVC office.
After changing your New Jersey address on your car registration, you can purchase a duplicate registration card and/or driver’s license that displays your new address for a fee. However, the New Jersey MVC does not require you to purchase a replacement credential after a change of address. To learn more about these application methods, download our free guide.
Note: If you have a legal name change, you may be required to obtain a replacement car registration displaying your new name.
Updating Online
For a change of address online in NJ, you must be able to provide personal information, including your driver’s license number and full Social Security Number (SSN). If you have this information, you are able to submit your request online.
To do so, simply visit the MVC website and follow the prompts. After changing your address online, you will receive a confirmation letter as proof of completing the transaction.
Since the state requires you to notify the MVC within seven days of changing your address, it is important to keep this confirmation on you as proof of your compliance with this statewide law.

In Person
To perform an address change on registration and driver’s license credentials in person, you must visit a local MVC office to submit your request. If you wish to purchase a replacement registration card before leaving the office, you must also pay a nominal fee and present proof of your identity and address.
By Mail
If you prefer to submit your MVC change of address request by mail, you must send a signed letter to the department’s Database Corrections Unit in Trenton. With your request, you must include a few key documents, including proof of the new address.
Can I change my car registration address in New Jersey during my renewal period?
Changing your vehicle registration address at the same time as your car registration renewal is possible. You can simply respond to the renewal notice you receive from the New Jersey MVC with the correct information.
After changing your address and renewing your MVC credentials, you will receive a replacement document in the mail that displays this new information.
