About Changing Your Address on Your Alaska Registration

You must file a DMV change of address in Alaska with the state Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) whenever you move or decide to use a different mailing address. You must include all affected vehicles and driver’s license numbers, as the DMV does not have a single database with all driver records.

Drivers can change car registration address information in person, online or by mail. Review the following sections to learn the most effective ways to notify the Alaska DMV that your address has changed and what information is required to complete the process.

When is an Alaska DMV change of address necessary?

There are several scenarios that require an address change on car registration in Alaska. If you move to a new home within the state, you must notify the Alaska DMV of your new address as soon as possible. If you decide to have your DMV renewal notices sent to another address, this is also a reason to notify the division.

If you are within six weeks of your registration’s expiration date, you must submit your DMV change of address request before renewing your registration. Because your new registration materials will be mailed to the DMV address on file, waiting too late to update your address can result in your card and tabs being sent to the wrong location.

How can I change my car registration address in Alaska?

There are three options for submitting a DMV change of address form to the Alaska DMV. You can change car registration address information in person, online or by mail. Regardless of the method you choose, the same information is needed, including your:

  • Full legal name.
  • Phone number
  • New residence address.
  • Driver’s license number.
  • License plate number.

In Person

Any Alaska DMV office can accept address change on registration applications. Simply locate your nearest branch office and visit during that location’s hours of operation. You must complete an application and submit it to the representative for processing.

You can submit a change of address online, provided that you have an Alaska driver’s license or ID card linked to your vehicle. If you have a copy of your registration renewal notice, you must enter the registration renewal number (RRN) to begin the online process.

If it is not available, you can input your license plate number and the last two digits of your vehicle identification number (VIN).

Note: The DMV will not send an address change confirmation once you submit the request.

By Mail

Printing and completing a DMV change of address form is the easiest way to submit your new address information by mail. However, you can  also write a letter stating, “I want to change my car registration address” and include the information listed above. Note that you must sign the letter, as unsigned documents will be rejected.

Be sure to list all vehicles you wish to update, and mention if you also want to update your driver’s license. In this case, you may need to send in a separate application for a duplicate license.
