About Changing Your Address on Your Rhode Island Registration

You must perform a Rhode Island DMV change of address whenever you move from one part of the state to another, as failure to do so may result in the loss of mail.

If you do not change car registration address information after you move into a new home, you may not receive license plate renewal notices from the state Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Additionally, you may not receive important notifications pertaining to your Rhode Island vehicle and driver’s license.

Once your address changes, you can easily notify the Rhode Island DMV by submitting your request online, in person or by mail.

Review the information below to learn more about these application methods and the steps you must take to update the address on your vehicle registration

How can I change my car registration address in Rhode Island?

When you perform an address change on car registration credentials, the DMV will simultaneously update your driver records as well. As such, you only need to submit one DMV change of address form after you move from one part of the state to another.

When you update your address online, by mail or in person, you will update your driver and vehicle registration records at the same time. Learn more about these application methods in the sections below.

In Person

To update your DMV address information in person, you must visit a local DMV office in Rhode Island to submit a completed change of address notice form. If you wish to purchase replacement credentials that display your new address, you must also submit a completed application and payment for the required fee.

Updating Online

To submit your change of address online, you must hold a Rhode Island operator’s license and be able to provide your driver’s license number, last name and date of birth. If you do not hold a Rhode Island driver’s license, you must submit your request by mail.

After submitting your online request, you will not receive replacement DMV credentials that display your new address. If you wish to purchase replacement DMV documents, visit your local Division of Motor Vehicles to submit your request in person.

By Mail

When you need to perform an address change on registration and driver’s license credentials, you may also choose to submit your request by mail. To do so, forward a completed change of address notice to the DMV’s office in Cranston.

If you wish to purchase duplicate credentials that display your new address, you must also submit an application and payment for the applicable fee.
