About Changing Your Address on Your Michigan Registration
Performing a Michigan DMV change of address is an important process to complete whenever you move into a new residence. However, you do not need to change car registration address information within a specific amount of time, as the Secretary of State (SOS) only requires you to change the name on your driver’s license or ID card.
After your address changes, you must immediately change the name on your Michigan driver’s license or identification card. If you do not update the information on these credentials, you could face driving penalties. Keep in mind that when you change the name on your driver’s license, you will automatically update your voter registration records as well.
While performing an address change on car registration credentials is not a process that you must immediately complete in the state of Michigan, you may choose to update your vehicle record when you change the address on your driver’s license or ID card.
Alternatively, you may update your vehicle record when you renew your vehicle’s license plates. To learn more about the requirements for changing your address on your registration, review the information below.
How can I change my car registration address in Michigan?
There are several ways to submit a DMV change of address form if you wish to update your vehicle registration credentials after moving into a new home. Depending on your preferred method and how soon after moving you would like to submit your request, you may choose to apply online or wait until your next registration renewal period.
Keep in mind that the process to update your address on your registration is not the same as the process for changing your name on your documents.
Updating Online
To apply for a change of address online at any time, you may log into the electronic ExpressSOS portal by providing your Michigan driver’s license number or state ID number. After logging in and following the prompts, you can easily change the address on your registration credentials.
While Renewing Your Registration Credentials
If you do not wish to update your vehicle records immediately after changing your address, you may wait until you renew your license plates. Before your license plates expire, you may renew them online, in person at an SOS office or by mail. You may update your address at this time.
To perform an address change on registration credentials while renewing your license plates online, however, you cannot use the Quick Renewal option.
If you choose to submit your DMV change of address request while renewing your car registration by mail, you must have received a renewal notice from the SOS. Then, you must cross out your old information before writing your new address directly onto the renewal notice.

Applying for a Michigan DMV Change of Address on a Driver’s License
While you do not need to change your car registration address immediately after moving, you must update the information on your Michigan driver’s license or identification card as soon as possible after your address changes.
To do so, you may submit your request online, in person at an SOS office or by mailing an application to the address provided on the official form.
If you do not change the address on your driver’s license or Michigan ID card immediately after moving to a new home, the SOS could suspend your driving credentials. Therefore, submitting a DMV change of address application immediately after moving into your new home is typically a good idea. There is no fee to make this change.
In the future, the Michigan SOS will provide you with the opportunity to simultaneously update the address for your voter, driver and vehicle registration records. However, at this time, changing your address on your license will not change the address on your car registration.
