How to Change Your Address on Your Massachusetts Registration

Performing a Massachusetts DMV change of address is one of the first steps you must complete after moving to a new residence. State law requires you to notify the State Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) of your new address within 30 days of moving.

Note: When you change car registration address information with the RMV, the department automatically updates your vehicle registration and driver’s license records.

After submitting a DMV change of address form to the Registry, you may choose to order a replacement registration card and/or driver’s license that displays your new address. However, the state does not require you to purchase replacement credentials after your address changes. Instead, you may write your new address directly onto your current driver’s license and registration records, covering your old address so that this information is no longer visible.

To learn more about Massachusetts address change requirements and the steps you must take to update your address with the RMV, review the information below.

How to Apply for an Address Change on Car Registration in Massachusetts

You may be wondering, “How can I change my car registration address if my mailing or residential address changes?” In most cases, you can notify the Massachusetts RMV of your new address by submitting a request online or by phone, depending on your preference.

How to Update Online

To submit your change of address online, you must be able to provide the last four digits of your Social Security Number (SSN) and your driver’s license or state-issued ID card number. You must also provide a valid email address, date of birth and last name.

By Phone

If you prefer to notify the RMV of your new address by phone, you may call your local RMV Contact Center. Then, you must provide your name, current address, the last four digits of your SSN and a driver’s license or ID card number.

After Your Massachusetts RMV Change of Address

After performing an address change on registration and driver’s license credentials, the Massachusetts RMV will automatically update your voter registration address. If you do not wish to change your voter registration address, make a note of this when changing your address with the Massachusetts RMV.

After changing your car registration address with the Massachusetts RMV, you must notify your vehicle insurance company of your new address. You will need to contact your insurance agent directly to make this change.

If you have not already done so, you must also apply for a Change of Address (COA) with the United States Postal Service (USPS). Depending on your preferred application method, USPS accepts COA requests online or in person. If you submit your request online, however, you must pay a small fee to validate your identity.

Duplicate Registration After Changing Massachusetts Car Registration Address

If you change your vehicle registration address and wish to purchase a duplicate registration that displays this new information, you may submit your request online, in person at a local RMV Service Center or by phone. If you choose to submit your application in person, you may also visit a local AAA branch if you are an active member of the American Automobile Association (AAA).

If you also wish to replace your driver’s license after changing your address, you may submit your request online, in person or by phone. However, you may need to verify your lawful presence in the U.S. if you submit your request in person at an RMV Service Center.
