About Changing Your Address on Your Louisiana Registration

Requesting a Louisiana DMV change of address is one of the first steps you must take after you move from one part of the state to another. Failure to update your information may cause you to miss out on important mail from the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). If you do not change your car registration address, for example, you may not receive your yearly vehicle registration renewal reminders.

You may perform an address change on car registration credentials in person or by mail, depending on your preference. To learn more about how to update your address with the Louisiana OMV, download our free guide.

How can I change my car registration address in Louisiana?

To perform an address change on registration credentials, you must first notify the United States Postal Service (USPS) of your new mailing information in person or online. Then, you must notify the Louisiana OMV to update the information on your vehicle registration materials.

You cannot perform this type of change of address online in LA, as the OMV requires you to submit your request in person or by mail.

In Person

If you wish to submit your LA DMV change of address form in person, you must visit a local OMV location during regular operating hours. During your office visit, you must present:

  • Proof of automobile insurance.
  • Payment for the applicable fee.
  • Your vehicle’s current registration.

When changing your car registration address in person at a local OMV office, you may pay the applicable fee by credit card, electronic check, money order, electronic funds transfer or cash. If you have any questions about these accepted payment methods, contact the OMV office before heading in.

By Mail

If you wish to update your address by mail, you must send the OMV a written request along with a copy of your vehicle’s current registration certificate. You must also include a check or money order as payment for the applicable fee.

When submitting your OMV change of address request by mail, you must include a driver’s license number, street address and telephone number on all personal checks, or the Office of Motor Vehicles will return the payment to you.
