Applying for Car Registration in Georgia

You must apply for a Georgia vehicle registration when you purchase or acquire an automobile from a dealership or private seller. However, the DMV registration process varies slightly depending on how you got the vehicle.

Note: If your vehicle is already registered but you have lost your registration documents, you will need to order a duplicate car registration instead.

If you purchase the vehicle from a licensed car dealership, for instance, the dealer will likely submit your registration application on your behalf to your local county tag office. If you purchase the vehicle from an independent party, or if the dealership will not forward your application to the Department of Revenue (DOR), you must visit a county tag office to apply on your own.

Failure to obtain a DMV car registration in Georgia for your vehicle can result in penalty fees, since driving without a valid registration is against state law. To learn more about the steps you must take to register your vehicle, review the information below.

To obtain DOR registration credentials for your motor vehicle, you must also purchase a valid insurance policy prior to visiting your county tag office. During your office visit, you will be asked to present proof of insurance.

In some cases, your recently acquired vehicle may need to pass an emissions inspection prior to registration, especially if you are transferring the automobile from a country or state that did not require the vehicle to be titled. In these situations, the Georgia DOR also requires you to present the vehicle’s previous registration card when registering it in the state.

Getting Vehicle Registration Records in Georgia

“Where can I apply for a Georgia car registration near me once I acquire a new or used motor vehicle?”

After purchasing a vehicle, you must provide your county tag office with several important documents, including proof of automobile ownership (such as an original certificate of title) and your valid Georgia driver’s license. Typically, you can submit these application materials in person, or you may mail them to your local tag office if you prefer to do so.

In Person

If you wish to pay vehicle registration fees and taxes in person, you must visit the tag office in the county where you live. During your office visit, you must present proof of your identity, evidence of vehicle ownership and a completed registration application. Additionally, you must present proof of a valid automobile insurance policy.

You must pay car registration fees and taxes before leaving the office. However, these fees may vary depending on the county where you reside and the sales price of your newly acquired vehicle. If you have any questions about these fees, you may contact your county tag office before heading in.

Note: Keep in mind that the one-time fees you will pay when registering your vehicle are different from the fees you will pay during your yearly car registration renewal.

By Mail

If you prefer to obtain new GA  vehicle registration credentials by mail, you may forward your application materials to the tag office in the county where you live. If you have any questions about the types of documents you must submit with your application, you may contact the tag office before mailing in your registration paperwork.
