Applying for Car Registration in Ohio

To apply for Ohio vehicle registration materials, you must visit a local Deputy Registrar License Agency in person. During your visit, you will need to submit several important documents, including proof of car insurance. If you are temporarily outside of the state and cannot visit a local Deputy Registrar office, however, you may apply by mail.

After applying for the initial DMV registration in person, you will be able to complete your yearly car registration renewal online, in person or by mail. To learn more about Ohio’s registration requirements and the steps you must take to register your vehicle, review the information below.

Ohio DMV Car Registration Requirements

To obtain new car registration credentials for your recently acquired automobile, you must first understand the state’s mandatory insurance and emissions laws. When registering your vehicle, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) will require you to sign a Financial Responsibility Statement as proof that you meet the state’s minimum insurance requirements.

As part of the BMV car registration process, your newly purchased vehicle may also need to undergo an emissions inspection (known as an E-Check) if you live in a participating county such as Cuyahoga, Lake or Portage. If you reside in a participating county, your registered vehicle must pass an E-Check once every two years.

Getting Ohio Vehicle Registration Records

You may be wondering, “Where can I apply for car registration near me if I have never registered a vehicle before?” To obtain auto registration credentials for your new or used vehicle, you must visit a local Deputy Registrar License Agency.

Note: If your car is already registered but you have lost your registration, you should simply request a replacement car registration instead.

During your office visit, you must present the vehicle’s certificate of title and your driver’s license or state ID number. If you cannot provide your driver’s license or Ohio identification number, you must provide proof of your Social Security Number (SSN).

You may apply by mail if you are temporarily outside of the state when you need to register your vehicle. To do so, you must forward a completed Application for Registration by Mail to the BMV’s Registration Support Services division in Columbus.

Ohio Vehicle Registration Fees

When obtaining new registration credentials for your motor vehicle, you must also provide payment for any applicable taxes and fees. A list of fees is available under the Ohio BMV’s website.

To pay car registration fees at your local BMV office, you may use cash, money order, check or credit card as an accepted form of payment. If registering your vehicle by mail rather than in person, you must pay by check or money order.
