About Replacing a Car Registration in Delaware
You must replace a lost car registration in Delaware as soon as your original card is no longer in your possession. To purchase a replacement, you must visit your local Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to submit your request in person.

Getting a Duplicate Registration in Delaware
To replace your car registration cards due to loss, theft or damage, you must visit any local DMV office to file your request in person. During your office visit, you will need to submit the following:
- Proof of liability insurance
- Your vehicle’s license plate number (registration number)
- Payment for the required application fee

Getting a Delaware DMV Copy of Registration Plates and Decals
In addition to obtaining replacement car registration cards once these items become unreadable or are no longer in your possession, you must purchase duplicate car registration license plates and decals when necessary.
If you believe that your license plate was stolen from you, you must first file a police report with a local law enforcement agency. It is imperative that you complete this step to protect yourself against identity theft and fraud.
It also ensures that you will not be held responsible for any fraudulent activity using your vehicle information.
Once that step is complete, visit any DMV facility to purchase your replacement license plate and/or validation decal.
When obtaining an auto registration replacement decal and/or license plate, you must pay the required application fee. If you wish to order a new number for your license plate, you must also submit proof of automobile insurance and the vehicle’s certificate of title.
